2 2010-09-02 12:20:00.0 20100902 Adam Hooker 3132 TH-Adam-Hooker-review.gif <p>The positive figure was achieved despite revenues falling for the 26 weeks to 3 July 2010.</p> <p>During the period, the company achieved a turnover of &pound;207.3m, a 5.2% like-for-like drop on 2009.</p> <p>John Fry, chief executive officer of Johnston Press, said: "In the first half, the group achieved an operating profit before non-recurring items of &pound;40.5m, up from &pound;38.2m in the prior year.&nbsp; This represents our first operating profit increase reported since 2006."</p> <p>It reported a pre-tax profit of &pound;44m, which compared to a loss of &pound;93.6m for the same period last year, brought about by massive restructuring in order to cope with its large debt.</p> <p>Johnston's cost-cutting measures also impacted on the first-half results, with total costs for the period &pound;13.6m lower than last year.</p> <p>Net debt was reduced by &pound;20.9m since the start of the year, however, at &pound;401.1m it is still drawing "significantly higher interest costs", the company said in a statement.</p> <p>Advertising revenue had continued to decline, but the rate of reduction was getting smaller; down to 6.3% in the period from 32.7% in the first half of 2009.</p> <p>Fry added: "As we move into the second half of the year, we have seen the improving trend in advertising revenues continue with total advertising in the first six weeks on a like-for-like basis only down 3.7%.&nbsp;</p> <p>"These industry-leading trends that demonstrate the strength of our publishing portfolio along with our continued focus on costs, efficiencies and debt reduction, give the board confidence that, in the absence of a further deterioration in the UK economy, the outcome for the group in 2010 will be in line with current market expectations."</p> [empty string] [empty string] [empty string] [empty string] PNW en_GB printweek.com 0 [empty string] 1025876 1 1 News 0 [empty string] [empty string] 2 2000 Web (online only story, NOT from printed publication) Johnston-Press-increases-profit-first-time-2006 Newspaper publisher Johnston Press increased its operating profit before recurring items for the first time since 2006 during the first six months of 2010. "Every element in the chain performed superbly, with all the security elements in place. It all worked very successfully," he said.<br /><br />"This launch has really brought books back to the fore, and it's a terrific example of book manufacturing working as well as it really can do."<br /><br />St Ives Clays made use of its &pound;6m automated secure warehouse to keep copies safeguarded prior to publication. "We made and stored the books under very secure conditions; they went straight into our high bay warehouse prior to entering the Random House distribution system," explained Clays managing director Kate McFarlan.<br /><br />While Random House has kept details of the print run confidential, the books has soared to the top of Amazon's book bestseller list, and Waterstones has described sales as "phenomenal".<br /><br />A spokesman for the retailer said: "Based on first day sales, it's the fastest-selling autobiography we've ever seen &ndash; including celebrities and sports stars &ndash; we've never seen one move so quickly."<br /><br />Bradford confirmed the title had already been reprinted and described the order book as "very healthy". 4 2010-09-01 17:04:00.0 20100901 Helen Morris 3130 TH-Helen-Morris2.jpg <p>At the High Court in Glasgow yesterday (31 August), John McHugh, 54, Joseph Boland, also 54, Martin Gray, 41, and Garry Ralph, 38, were sentenced to prison having <a href="http://www.printweek.com/business/news/1022153/Drug-dealers-used-print-company-supply-35m-worth-cannabis/">previously pleaded guilty</a> to the supply of cannabis resin.</p> <p>The men were arrested last year as part of an intelligence-led investigation by the Scottish Crime and Drug Enforcement Agency (SCDEA), codenamed Quartz, which seized more than one tonne of resin with an estimated street value of nearly &pound;3m.</p> <p>Police witnessed drugs being delivered in a van to a business premises on Scotts Road in Paisley in July 2009, which at the time was being operated as The Print Finishers.
